Blessings To You This Holiday Season

Happy Winter Solstice * Happy Hanukkah
Merry Christmas
* Happy Kwanzaa

Amma Love

The spirit of Christmas is sharing and caring. Let us not just be focused on our lives alone.  Let us look around a little and see the needs of others as well.  Even if you are able to help just one person, then you have made a difference. If my children can do this, that would be the real Christmas celebration.

Sweet Holidays

Amma at Christmas Time

Homemade cookies and chai are thoughtful gifts to share with others.
What delicious ways can you make the holidays a little sweeter for someone else?

Chai

What better way to keep warm on a cold winter's day than a hot cup of chai! A little sweet, a little spicy, and always served piping hot. Try this wonderful recipe from Seattle Satsang star chai maker Kavita.
  • 4 1/4 tsp of tea leaves or 4-5 tea bags
  • 2 cup water
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 ½ tsp grated ginger
  • 2 pinch cinnamon powder
  • 2 pinch cardamom powder ( optional)

Instructions:

  1. Boil water. Add grated ginger and chai powder. Let it boil for 2 mins.
  2. Now add milk and let it come to boil and then stop the gas.
  3. Add in cinnamon powder and cardamom powder.
  4. You are ready to strain the chai and enjoy. Serves 4 people.

Happy Holidays

Snowball Cookies

You can't throw them at the snowman across the street, but you won't want to after you try just one of these wintertime sweets! These fun treats will make it feel like the snow is falling outside, while you stay toasty warm inside baking these gifts for your family and friends.

Preheat oven to 300 F

  • 1 cup butter or vegan butter
  • 4 Tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 cup finely chopped pecans
  • 2 cups flour

Instructions:

  1. Cream together softened butter, powdered sugar and vanilla until well combined.
  2. Mix in pecans.
  3. On low speed slowly add the flour.  Be careful not to overmix the dough.  It will look slightly crumbly, but when you roll it into a ball it should hold its form.
  4. Roll into small balls and place on a cookie sheet.
  5. Bake for 30-40 minutes, taking care not to overbake.
They are done when the bottoms are a nice golden brown.
  6. Cool on a cookie rack for 5 minutes, then roll in a bowl of powdered sugar.
  7. Once cookies are cool, repeat rolling them in powdered sugar.

Enjoy with a hot cup of chai!

Amma on Stage

"Bhajans are prayers in the form of songs, rich in meaning and full of devotional content.
When one sings a bhajan wholeheartedly, they completely forget themselves and
become one with their longing for the divine; this is meditation." - Amma

Update:  AYUDH (Youth)
Plastic Awareness Presentation

AYUDH (Youth) Plastic Awareness Presentation

The educational AYUDH Plastic Awareness workshop was a huge success with 21 people signing up!  Several adults shared that their kids passed on new information to other parents and siblings once the call was over!

It was so fun to see the kids interested and asking questions about how to help the environment!  At the end of the presentation, I asked the kids to write one thing they had learned.  I thought you would enjoy seeing their replies!

~Sonali

The 5 R’s

  • Refuse -refuse things you don't really need like one-time-use plastics
  • Reduce -reduce your waste
  • Reuse -try to select reusable versions of one-time-use products like water bottles, lunch containers, etc., and reuse plastic or glass containers that originally had food or other products
  • Repurpose- upcycle used plastics
  • Recycle- when you can't refuse, reduce, reuse, or repurpose, then recycle, but remember to recycle it correctly so it doesn't end up in a landfill or oceans

Great Feedback from Attendees!

  • “The 5 R’s
  • “Not all plastic can be recycled.”
  • “I learned that recyclables need to be empty, clean, and dry to end up properly in the factory.”
  • “Plastic bags aren’t recyclable.”
  • “You have to clean plastic before you recycle.”
  • “I learned animals get affected by plastic and not all things can go in the bin.”
  • “I learned about bottle bricks.  5 R’s was cool.”
  • “I learned how plastic gets reused if you recycle.”
  • “Empty, clean and dry.”
