Seva in Indian Villages by Scotti Rice from Portland Satsang

Om Namah Shivaya

Just as a beautiful lotus flower will bloom from the dirtiest of ponds, so too a human soul can shine even in the midst of severe poverty. That has been my personal lesson for the past six weeks as I have traveled with teams from AmmachiLabs to Amma's Adopted Villages in Jammu, Himachal Pradesh, and Bihar. Living in those villages, I have spent time with the people we come to help, learning both what is good in their lives and where they desperately need our help. Here are a few of the beautiful souls who blessed my camera in Ratanpur, Bihar, the poorest village I have visited.

Village life is the heart and soul of India. In the following blog posts, I have tried to describe things Amma is doing to improve and sustain it.

Please check back again at http://e.amritapuri.org/blogs/ in a few weeks. There are still more stories to be told from my trip.

There are many opportunities to serve in Indian villages. Short term, there are seva trips from Amritapuri to close by Kerala villages happening often. Just ask and watch the bulletin boards while you are there. Longer term, there is a Fellowship Program with AmritaServe to spend a year in a village. See http://amritaserve.org/fellowship-program. Designed for recent Indian college graduates, the fellowship program is actually open to everyone. Ursula Luciano from Portland is currently serving a year in Uttarkashi, in the Himalaya mountains.
